The long-awaited live-action musical film "The Little Mermaid" from Walt Disney Company Korea finally has a release date. The distributor announced on Friday that the film will hit theaters on May 24, bringing the beloved story of a mermaid who falls in love with a human prince to life once again.
Directed by Rob Marshall, known for his work on acclaimed films such as "Chicago," "Memoirs of a Geisha," and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," the film is based on the popular animated feature-length film from 1989. This modern retelling will feature a new cast, with Halle Bailey taking on the role of Ariel, the little mermaid who dreams of a life on land with her beloved Prince Eric, played by Jonah Hauer-King.
One notable aspect of the new casting is the decision to have Bailey, a talented singer, play the role of Ariel. Notably, she is the first person of color to play the role of an originally white princess in Disney history. Fans have eagerly awaited the release of the film and the opportunity to see Bailey shine in this groundbreaking role.
Melissa McCarthy will take on the role of Ursula, the sea witch who stands in Ariel's way her, while Simone Ashley will portray Indira, a new character created for the film. With a star-studded cast and an acclaimed director at the helm, "The Little Mermaid" is sure to make a splash with audiences around the world.
The release of the film has been highly anticipated since it was announced in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic caused delays in production and release, but now fans can look forward to finally seeing the new take on this classic story. With stunning visuals, beloved songs, and a fresh cast, "The Little Mermaid" is poised to be one of the most talked-about films of the year.
