Photographer Marcelo Racana has unveiled his latest body of work titled "Wild Strawberries," a compelling series of street photographs that captures diverse subjects, places, and moments across different time periods. The collection, primarily shot between 2023 and 2025, represents Racana's ongoing exploration of urban life and the unexpected discoveries found while wandering city streets.
The majority of images in the series fall within the street photography genre, documenting encounters and observations made during Racana's walks through various urban environments. According to the photographer, street photography offers a unique balance between intentional searching and spontaneous discovery. "In the streets there is searching, but there is more of finding," Racana explains, emphasizing how the medium allows for unexpected moments of revelation.
Racana's creative process involves an intimate dialogue with his raw images, allowing each photograph to guide its own development and treatment. He describes this approach as letting "the original suggests how to work with it, how to approach it and tackle it." While his subjects may appear documentary in nature, Racana's intention consistently aims to transcend mere documentation, pushing each image toward revealing deeper meanings and connections.
The photographer views his medium as serving multiple functions beyond simple record-keeping. "Photography is document and memory, but it is also trace," he states, describing how images capture the passage of time, human presence, and worldly changes. This concept of photography as trace extends to encompass mystery and the ineffable aspects of human experience that often go unnoticed in daily life.
Racana's philosophy centers on photography's ability to unveil hidden aspects of reality that have become invisible through routine and familiarity. He describes reality as "a torrent" filled with fleeting moments of beauty, mystery, and testimony that he feels fortunate to capture when the opportunity arises. Through his lens, he seeks to lift the veil that obscures deeper truths, much like other forms of artistic expression.
Regarding his artistic style, Racana takes an organic approach, allowing his photographic voice to develop naturally rather than forcing a particular aesthetic. He hopes that viewers will recognize something distinctive in his work while remaining unconscious to himself, comparing this natural evolution to the uniqueness of one's handwriting style.
The series title "Wild Strawberries" draws inspiration from Racana's life in Sweden, where he currently resides. He explains the cultural practice of foraging in forests surrounding Swedish cities, particularly the joy of discovering bushes hiding wild strawberries during mushroom-gathering expeditions. These special locations, much like the moments captured in his photography, are treasured secrets that hold particular significance for those who discover them.
