Ni-ki, a member of the boy band Enhypen, recently faced criticism and subsequently apologized for comments made on fan community service Weverse regarding South Korea's March 1 Independence Movement Day.
In a post addressing the band's fan club, Engene, Ni-ki wrote, "Cheer up Engene, it's just tomorrow and then it's the weekend." A fan informed Ni-ki that Korea takes the following day off due to March 1 being Independence Movement Day. Ni-ki responded, "I'm jealous."
The brief online exchange drew immediate backlash as March 1 Independence Movement Day holds historical significance, commemorating the anti-colonial independence movement against Japanese imperialist rule in 1919. Notably, Ni-ki is of Japanese nationality, intensifying the sensitivity of his remarks among Korean fans, particularly on issues related to Japanese colonialism.
Recognizing the controversy, Ni-ki promptly deleted the post and issued an apology, stating, "I apologize for my imprudent expression regarding such an important national holiday as the March 1 Independence Movement Day. I took down the post immediately after realizing what I had done. I promise to take more care in the future."
The incident highlights the scrutiny that Korean celebrities face for any perceived misstep concerning significant national issues, including election days and holidays marking historical events.
