SEOUL, South Korea — "Doctor Cha," South Korea's latest family medical drama, has captured the hearts of local and global viewers with its relatable and empowering story of a middle-aged woman who rediscovers her passion for medicine after sacrificing her career for her family.
The show's lead actors, Uhm Jung-hwa and Kim Byong-chul, have also garnered attention, taking the top spots on the weekly rankings of the most viral actors, according to analytics firm Good Data Corp.
In the 16-part series, Cha Jeong-suk (played by Uhm) is a mother, wife, and daughter-in-law who abandons her medical career to become a housewife. However, an unexpected incident makes her realize that her life as Cha Jeong-suk has disappeared without her even knowing.
The drama, which premiered on April 15, showcases Cha's journey as she chooses to return to the medical profession, which she left 20 years ago, and becomes a first-year resident. Unlike typical housewife-to-career-woman storylines, "Doctor Cha" portrays a strong, independent woman who does not rely on a man's support or lucky coincidences to achieve her goals.
"Doctor Cha" has become the most viral drama series in South Korea and is also popular in various countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore. The series ranked at number 10 on the Netflix global top 10 series chart as of Tuesday.
The drama airs at 10:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and is available on Tving and Netflix. With its inspiring story and excellent performances, "Doctor Cha" is a must-watch for anyone who loves dramas that challenge gender stereotypes and promote women's empowerment.
