Dowden Explores SM Headquarters, Discusses Collaboration on British Boy Group

During his visit to South Korea for the 3rd Summit for Democracy, British Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden paid a visit to SM Entertainment, a prominent K-pop powerhouse headquartered in Seoul. Dowden, accompanied by British Ambassador to South Korea Colin Crooks and special adviser Edward de Minckwitz, met with key officials including Chief Executive Officer Jang Cheol-hyuk and Chief Global Officer Choi Mi-na at SM Entertainment's headquarters.

Dowden, known for his previous role as Britain’s secretary of state for digital, culture, media, and sport, has expressed a keen interest in the culture and entertainment sectors, particularly due to his daughters' love for K-pop. The visit to SM Entertainment was facilitated through the British Council in Korea. 

▲ Courtesy of SM EntertainmentDuring the tour of SM Entertainment's facilities, Dowden explored recording and mixing studios, as well as spaces designated for artists within the label. SM Entertainment reported that Dowden showed interest in the studio setup and praised the professionalism and vocal skills of the agency's artists after listening to mixed and pre-mixed sounds.

CEO Jang Cheol-hyuk informed Dowden of SM Entertainment's collaboration with the British entertainment company M&B, revealing plans for the launch of a British boy group. The joint effort aims to produce a British boy group trained in the K-pop style, with aspirations for success in the global music market.

Dowden's visit to SM Entertainment coincides with his attendance at the 3rd Summit for Democracy in Seoul, underscoring the intersection of cultural diplomacy and political engagement during his trip to South Korea.
