The much-anticipated disaster thriller "Concrete Utopia," featuring acclaimed actors Lee Byung-hun and Park Seo-jun, has received a prestigious invitation to the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival. The film, distributed by Lotte Entertainment, will be showcased in the esteemed Orbita section of the 56th edition of the festival, taking place from October 5 to 15. Renowned as one of the world's top three fantasy genre film festivals, Sitges stands alongside Portugal's Oporto International Film Festival and Belgium's Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival.
Sitges Film Festival holds a special focus on innovative storytelling and creativity, with genres ranging from fantasy and thriller to horror. The Orbita category will host compelling action, thriller, and black comedy films competing for recognition.
Described by the Spanish distributor as a boundary-breaking disaster movie, "Concrete Utopia" offers gripping entertainment while raising profound questions about human behavior under extreme circumstances. The film revolves around the survivors of a massive earthquake, who find refuge in the only standing apartment building. Amidst chaos, Young-tak (Lee) courageously defends his fellow residents against external threats, supported by a devoted married couple portrayed by Park Seo-jun and Park Bo-young.
The film's acclaim extends beyond Sitges, as it was also invited to feature in the "Spotlight on Korea" section at the upcoming Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) scheduled from October 12 to 29, as revealed by Lotte Entertainment.
Directed by Um Tae-hwa, known for the 2016 fantasy film "Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned," "Concrete Utopia" boasts a global reach, having been sold to 152 countries including France, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, and Japan. The film's production is credited to Climax Studio, renowned for its contributions to Netflix's original series "D.P" and "Hellbound."
As the anticipation builds, "Concrete Utopia" is set to grace local theaters on August 9, showcasing the exceptional performances of Lee Byung-hun, Park Seo-jun, and Park Bo-young in a disaster film that breathes new life into the genre.
