Pixar's animated film "Inside Out 2" has taken the lead at the Korean box office following its release earlier this week, as reported by the Korean Film Council on Friday. The sequel to the 2015 film, which explores the emotions of adolescence, premiered on Wednesday.
By Thursday, "Inside Out 2" had drawn 135,782 viewers, bringing its total admissions to 332,286 over two days. The film continues the story of Riley, now a teenager, as her "mind headquarters" undergoes changes to accommodate new emotions associated with puberty. Four new emotions—anxiety, envy, ennui, and embarrassment—are introduced in this installment.
Following "Inside Out 2" in box office rankings is the sci-fi fantasy film "Wonderland," directed by Kim Tae-yong. Released on June 5, the film has attracted 536,636 viewers as of its second week. "Wonderland" centers on individuals reuniting with loved ones through artificial intelligence in a simulated virtual world called Wonderland.
The film features actors Tang Wei, Suzy, and Park Bo-gum, who play characters seeking connections with people they can no longer meet in real life. Jung Yu-mi and Choi Woo-shik portray staff members supporting the AI service. The plot follows a young couple, played by Suzy and Park, adjusting to life after Park's character suffers brain damage.
"Wonderland" was completed in 2020, but its release was postponed due to the pandemic. It marks the first collaboration between Tang Wei and director Kim Tae-yong since their marriage in 2014. The couple met during the filming of Kim’s 2010 English-language romance film "Late Autumn."
