Actress Lee Young-ae has donated 50 million won (approximately $36,000) to support the families of the 46 sailors who died in the sinking of the ROKS Cheonan, a South Korean Navy corvette, which was destroyed by a North Korean submarine torpedo in 2010. The donation was announced by a foundation supporting the families and surviving crew members on Monday.
Lee, a 53-year-old actress and the daughter of a Korean War veteran, made the donation in honor of those “who sacrificed their lives” for their country, expressing her appreciation for their service and dedication.
Lee has been recognized for her philanthropic efforts over the years. Last week, Good Neighbors, a Seoul-based NGO focused on children's rights, announced that Lee and her two children donated 51 million won to assist children suffering from illness. In December 2023, the Korea-U.S. Alliance Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed at strengthening relations between South Korea and the United States, revealed that Lee had made a donation of 50 million won the previous month.
