Acclaimed Trinidad-based artist Karen Sylvester will present her latest collection of paintings at Studio Joli Gallery starting October 18. The exhibition, titled "Somewhat Familiar," will feature the lush landscapes and intricate details that have made Sylvester one of the most sought-after and respected artists in the Caribbean region.

According to a media release, Sylvester uses her impressive artistic talent to express her deep reverence for nature and profound love for her homeland. Growing up along the banks of a river in Trinidad's Northern Range significantly influenced her particular passion for painting waterscapes, a genre that has become her specialty and brought her widespread recognition.

Despite having no formal artistic training, Sylvester has developed her distinctive skills through direct and intensive observation of her natural surroundings. Her creative process involves making detailed sketches and taking photographs, which she combines with her remarkable visual memory to transform physical landscapes into deeply emotional experiences that captivate viewers.

Sylvester has maintained an active presence in the art world since 1993, participating in both solo and group exhibitions locally and internationally. She continues to contribute to her community by participating in numerous art auctions and has been actively involved in environmental conservation efforts. Her commitment to fostering artistic growth extends to jurying art competitions, delivering lectures, and conducting demonstrations in schools and art groups.

As a generous mentor to fellow artists, Sylvester has hosted visiting artists from various countries, freely sharing her ideas, insights, and techniques with her peers. Her work has earned a place in the National Museum and can be found in private collections both domestically and abroad, cementing her status as a significant cultural figure.

The artist hopes her paintings will invite viewers to mentally step into the scenes within her picture frames, ultimately returning with a renewed sense of love and respect for the natural environment. This philosophy reflects her ongoing commitment to environmental awareness through artistic expression.

The "Somewhat Familiar" exhibition opens on October 18 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with the collection remaining on display until October 30. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Studio Joli Gallery is located at 21 Henry Pierre Street in St. James.
