The neighborhood, whose residents are affectionately known as "Parkies," offers an upscale, family-oriented lifestyle that seamlessly balances urban accessibility with suburban tranquility. This unique community character provides the perfect setting for the full-time residence of a growing family comprising a finance professional, a yoga teacher, and their four children under the age of five.

The project's timeline reflects the family's rapid growth during the design and construction phases. "When we started working on this project, the clients had just one very cute baby girl," recalls interior designer Joshua Rice. "By the time they moved in, they had four children under the age of five." This dramatic change in family size required careful consideration of both aesthetic goals and practical functionality throughout the home's design process.

The design approach centers on rich, earthy materials including grey limestone, wood panels, and stucco that create a sophisticated yet livable environment. The entry features striking fumed oak paneling with removable battens, establishing the home's commitment to darker, more complex color schemes from the moment visitors arrive. Rice acknowledges that convincing clients to embrace darker palettes in modern homes presents unique challenges in today's design market. "Most people equate modern with bright and white," he confesses, noting that this association makes darker modern designs "surprisingly difficult to sell in modern residential design." However, this particular project benefited from clients who shared the designer's vision for something more distinctive than standard contemporary aesthetics.

The clients brought an unconventional brief that perfectly aligned with Rice's design philosophy and personal interests. "The clients were young and enthusiastic; big fans of modern design but wanted something more unique and unusual than the typical design classics," he continues. "Luckily, that is my passion." This collaboration between like-minded parties enabled the creation of a residence that challenges typical expectations while maintaining the functionality essential for a busy family with multiple young children.

The Highland Park home ultimately demonstrates how modern design can successfully incorporate sophisticated, darker elements while remaining practical for family life.
