Brazilian photographer Christian Barroso's exceptional mobile photography skills earned him recognition at the 2020 Mobile Photography Awards, leading to an unforgettable trip from his home in Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo for the exhibition of winning images. Accompanied by three close friends, Barroso made the journey to see his acclaimed work displayed in a prestigious photography exhibition.

After viewing his photographs on display, the group decided to visit Farol Santander, an impressive skyscraper located in São Paulo's city center that houses a museum, art galleries, and an observation deck. The timing of their visit held special significance, as the original exhibition had been postponed until the summer of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "We were living in the first moments of normal life at the time," Barroso explained, reflecting on the period when restrictions were beginning to lift.

The group stopped for a snack at a café situated on the building's 26th floor, where Barroso found himself captivated by the atmosphere around him. He described the mood as somewhat melancholic, noting that despite the café's large, spacious layout, there was an overwhelming feeling of solitude. This sense of isolation was particularly emphasized by a lone woman sitting by herself, surrounded by long shadows cast across the room.

Recognizing a perfect photographic opportunity, Barroso strategically positioned himself behind the solitary woman to take advantage of the natural sunlight streaming through the large windows and the dramatic shadows being cast on the wall. He estimates the woman was in her mid-20s, though he chose not to approach or speak with her, preferring to capture the authentic, unposed moment.

Barroso openly acknowledges his artistic influences, describing himself as a huge admirer of renowned American photographer William Eggleston. He points out that various elements present in this particular image – including the strong geometrical lines, deep contrasting shadows, and rich colors – clearly reflect Eggleston's distinctive photographic style and approach.

Reflecting on his artistic intentions, Barroso expressed his hope that viewers would connect emotionally with the photograph. "I hope this photo makes people feel as if they have entered an intimate moment of someone's life, like a scene from a movie," he stated. He further explained his artistic philosophy, saying, "I like to capture moments of contemplative solitude. It is as if I am dealing with my own moments of introspection." This approach to photography allows Barroso to create images that resonate on a deeply personal level while inviting viewers to experience their own moments of quiet reflection.
