The European House of Photography (MEP) in Paris has parted ways with its director Simon Baker, marking the end of a significant chapter for the prestigious photography institution. The British curator, who took the helm of MEP in 2018, leaves behind an impressive legacy of exhibitions and artistic discoveries during his tenure at one of Europe's leading photography venues.
News of Baker's departure had been circulating during the recent Rencontres d'Arles photography festival, where he maintained his characteristic British composure. Despite the underlying tensions, Baker continued his professional commitments, co-curating with Elsa Janssen the highly acclaimed exhibition "Yves Saint Laurent and Photography," which explores the fascinating relationship between the legendary designer, his creations, and renowned photographers. The exhibition runs until October 5 at the Mécanique Générale in Parc des Ateliers and has been praised for its innovative approach to connecting fashion and photography.
Throughout the festival, Baker remained his usual spirited and passionate self, demonstrating his deep love for photography and Asian art. His dedication to nurturing emerging talent was evident when he served on the jury for the 8th Dior Prize for Photography and Visual Arts for Young Talent. On July 10 at the Luma Foundation, the jury unanimously awarded the prize to Dutch photographer Joel Quayson, reflecting Baker's commitment to supporting the next generation of visual artists.
Baker brought impressive credentials to his role at MEP, holding a doctorate in art history from University College London. His career trajectory led him to the Tate in London in 2009, where he joined as a curator in the photography and international art department.
