The Korean Cultural Center in Sweden (Koreanskt Kulturcenter, KKC) is partnering with the National Gugak Center to present special Pansori classes as part of the 2025 Overseas Korean Traditional Music Program. These free courses offer participants a unique opportunity to experience Korea's traditional musical storytelling art form under the guidance of a master performer.
The program is structured as intensive courses running four days per week from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Course 1 will take place from Monday, October 6 through Thursday, October 9, consisting of four sessions totaling eight hours of instruction. Course 2 follows the same format, running from Monday, October 13 through Thursday, October 16, also comprising four sessions for a total of eight hours.
The curriculum includes a comprehensive introduction to Pansori and instruction in vocal techniques and singing methods used by sorikkun, which is the Korean term for Pansori singers. Ms. Soo Hyun Moon will serve as the instructor for both courses. Each course is limited to eight participants, allowing for a total of 16 students across both sessions.
All classes will be conducted in English at the Korean Cultural Center in Sweden's M Floor. The program is open to participants aged 16 and older, though younger participants may attend if accompanied by a guardian. Registration is required and can be completed through an online form accessible via a provided link.
Pansori, written as 판소리 in Korean, represents a traditional Korean performing art that uniquely combines singing, rhythmic speech, and dramatic expression. This distinctive art form has gained international recognition and has been designated by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It is widely regarded as Korea's most distinctive form of musical storytelling, preserving centuries of Korean cultural tradition through its dynamic performance style.
