A striking giant sun has appeared on the facade of La Piscine art center in Brest, France, creating a buzz among passersby who look up with curiosity and wonder. The impressive mural, painted on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, adorns the front of La Piscine, an art venue and community meeting space located in the upper Jean-Jaurès district of Brest.

The eye-catching artwork is the creation of Georges Rousse, a renowned Parisian photographer and visual artist. Since December, La Piscine has been hosting an exhibition showcasing the artist's work, and this new mural serves as a spectacular addition to his presence in the city.

The massive painting depicts a radiant sun, and Rousse explains his artistic vision simply: "I wanted to symbolize light." The artist arrived in Brest on Monday to create this monumental piece and departed on Wednesday afternoon after completing his work.

Anne-Laure Maison and Michel Cam, the founders of La Piscine, which opened in December 2023, view the artwork as more than just decoration. "It's a gift from Georges to help revitalize the neighborhood," they explain, highlighting the community-focused intention behind the project.

This isn't Rousse's first artistic intervention in Brest. During a previous residency in March, the prolific artist created an installation in the former Pontaniou prison, a historic building slated for transformation into a community space by 2027. Currently on display in Cancale, this prison installation will be presented at La Piscine in the coming months. Regarding that earlier work, Rousse notes, "I wanted to express a certain violence linked to the prison."

The tireless septuagenarian artist hopes to return to the prison site to create a second installation, though not before the end of the year. His busy international schedule includes upcoming commitments in South Korea at the start of the school year, followed by scouting work in Argentina.

The retrospective exhibition dedicated to Georges Rousse at La Piscine will conclude in the fall. The show has already been extended twice due to its popularity and success. "We have welcomed more than 6,000 visitors. Word of mouth is working well," celebrates Anne-Laure Maison, who serves as the venue's volunteer artistic director alongside her partner.

The duo is already mobilizing for their next exhibition, which will focus on Japanese prints, demonstrating their commitment to bringing diverse artistic experiences to the Brest community.

La Piscine is located at 170 rue Jean-Jaurès in Brest. During the summer period, visits to the exhibition are available by appointment only. The venue maintains an active presence on Instagram, sharing updates about current and upcoming exhibitions.
