Students from across Germany have submitted innovative architectural proposals for transforming a long-neglected area in Chemnitz city center, presenting visions ranging from underground basketball arenas to tent-like roof structures reminiscent of Munich's Olympic Stadium. The competition organizer Mario Friedrich expressed satisfaction with the response to the design contest, which aims to revitalize what has become known as Marienplatz.
The targeted area, located behind the government building commonly referred to as the "Parteifalte" (Party Fold), represents what many consider an open wound in the heart of the city. This space has remained underdeveloped for decades, creating a significant gap in the urban fabric that became even more pronounced after the demolition of the "Forum" event center.
The name "Marienplatz" was coined by the organizers of the "Light our Vision" light festival, drawing inspiration from the area's historical street names. The district once housed Garten Street, Friedrich Street, and Marie Street, connecting it to the city's past while envisioning its future potential.
The student competition has generated creative solutions for addressing this urban void, with proposals that demonstrate both architectural ambition and practical consideration for the space's integration into Chemnitz's city center. The variety of submissions reflects different approaches to urban planning and community space development, from sports facilities to innovative roofing concepts that reference successful architectural projects in other German cities.
