Los Angeles-based design and architecture studio 22RE has completed a striking office conversion project, transforming a former artist studio into a vibrant workplace for creative agency Day Job. The project represents a thoughtful approach to adaptive reuse in the city's growing Glassell Park neighborhood.
The 1,800-square-foot building carries significant artistic heritage, having previously served as the studio of renowned artist Ed Ruscha. 22RE's intervention respects this legacy while creating a contemporary workspace that draws inspiration from residential design principles rather than conventional office layouts.
The exterior design establishes a bold presence with its austere monolithic form. The architects chose to clad the building in locally sourced Douglas fir combined with stucco, creating a material palette that reflects both sustainability concerns and regional architectural traditions. This approach demonstrates how adaptive reuse projects can honor their context while making contemporary statements.
The design strategy embraces a residentially inspired workplace concept, moving away from traditional corporate office environments toward something more intimate and creative. This approach aligns with current trends in workplace design, particularly for creative industries that benefit from more flexible and inspiring environments.
Photographer Yoshihiro Makino documented the completed project, capturing how the transformation maintains the building's artistic character while serving its new function. The project was led by Dean Levin and represents 22RE's continued exploration of adaptive reuse and creative workspace design in Los Angeles.
