A comprehensive new monograph celebrating the work of contemporary artist Derrick Adams has been published by Monacelli, marking the first complete survey of the artist's career spanning more than two decades. The book, titled "Derrick Adams," showcases the artist's distinctive geometric paintings and collage works that celebrate Black identity and everyday experiences through his signature multihued, faceted visual style.

Adams' artwork captures a wide range of subjects, from families enjoying leisure time to individuals walking through urban environments, all rendered in his characteristic collage-like compositions. His artistic approach draws inspiration from West African masks, reliquary figures, and carved sculptures, which he incorporates into contemporary scenes highlighting the daily lives and recreational activities of Black Americans. According to the publisher's statement, Adams' paintings consistently "capture moments of joy, resilience, and celebration."

The monograph is thoughtfully organized into three distinct sections: Channeling, Signaling, and Mirroring. These sections explore the artist's investigations into representation, identity, and media influence throughout his career. The book traces the development of Adams' unique visual language, which he personally describes as "seriocomic imagery," reflecting his commitment to ensuring Black American experiences are properly represented in contemporary art. The publisher notes that this work addresses "the dearth of such imagery in art history."

At the heart of Adams' artistic mission lies what the publisher describes as "a reinvigoration of the Black figure in art," an intention that permeates all the works featured in the comprehensive volume. His pieces utilize various media including acrylic paint, fabric collage, graphite, ink, grip tape, and even model cars on wood panels, creating layered compositions that range from intimate 14-inch pieces to expansive 192-inch panoramic works.

The timing of the monograph's release strategically coincides with a major mid-career survey exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. The exhibition, titled "View Finder," is scheduled to open on April 16 and will feature an impressive collection of 150 works spanning Adams' artistic development. This major museum presentation will provide visitors with an unprecedented opportunity to experience the breadth and evolution of Adams' artistic vision in person.

The "Derrick Adams" monograph is scheduled for official release on October 22 and is currently available for pre-order through the Colossal Shop. Art enthusiasts and collectors interested in learning more about Adams' work can explore additional content on his official website and Instagram account, where he regularly shares insights into his creative process and upcoming projects.
