A new educational facility has been completed in the remote village of Dedgaun, Nepal, designed by Italian architectural firm studio berardi miglio. The School of Social Development project represents a significant achievement in humanitarian architecture, bringing modern educational infrastructure to one of Nepal's most isolated communities.

The 400-square-meter facility was commissioned by humanitarian organization Jay Nepal, which sought to establish both a school and volunteer center in Bodgaun, a small impoverished village located approximately three hours north of Kathmandu. The project, completed in 2022, serves as an elementary and middle school while also functioning as a community hub for international volunteers working in the region.

Architects Lucia Miglio and Filippo Berardi faced numerous challenges throughout the design and construction process. The COVID-19 pandemic prevented the architects from visiting the site during the initial planning phases, forcing them to work remotely with local partners and rely on digital communication tools. Additionally, the project operated under severe financial constraints, with a total budget of approximately 100,000 euros, requiring innovative solutions to maximize impact while minimizing costs.

The building's design reflects a careful balance between modern architectural principles and local construction methods. Given the remote location and limited access to specialized materials and equipment, the architects prioritized the use of locally sourced materials and traditional building techniques that could be executed by regional craftsmen. This approach not only reduced costs but also ensured the building's long-term sustainability and maintenance feasibility.
