A Reddit user known as dontcountonmee made an extraordinary discovery while photographing an abandoned house recently, finding a film camera containing an undeveloped roll that would reveal intimate glimpses into the lives of the home's former residents. The urban explorer, who has been documenting abandoned places since his teenage years, took the film home and developed it himself, uncovering touching photographs of the previous owners' well-cared-for cats.

The photographer explained his passion for urban exploration in an email interview, stating that it serves as his way of documenting and preserving the history of places that are eventually demolished or lost to time. Shortly after entering the house, which appeared to have been suddenly abandoned at least a decade ago, he discovered the camera inside a drawer alongside other personal belongings, including jewelry and medication.

While dontcountonmee has found cameras during previous urban exploration adventures, this particular discovery stood out immediately. "I knew I had to know what was inside as soon as I saw it," he explained. "To my surprise, it was filled with photographs of the owners' cats. It was clear from the images that those cats were well cared for and lived in a loving home."

The discovery provided a unique window into the past that many urban explorers rarely experience. When examining photos of an abandoned home, especially one that was left essentially as is—which can happen for many reasons, many of them sad—it can be difficult to imagine what life was like inside the house when it was inhabited by real people, each with their own lives. Thanks to photos like the ones inside the camera, dontcountonmee didn't have to imagine at all and could peer back through time.

The emotional impact of exploring abandoned homes weighs heavily on the photographer. "It's quite saddening and serves as a reminder that one day, all of our belongings could end up like those in the abandoned houses I photograph," he reflected. "At times, I think about trying to locate the families of the former owners so I could return the photos I find. If there were a way to do so without invading anyone's personal privacy, I certainly would."

Dontcountonmee's expertise with film photography, which he has been practicing for at least 10 years, proved crucial in salvaging the forgotten images. He possesses the knowledge needed to handle developing old, expired film like what he found in this case, as well as the post-processing techniques required to make such images look their best. Although he often shoots with his digital camera, he makes sure to make time for analog photography. "While it is a time-consuming and costly hobby, I wouldn't have it any other way," he noted.

The technical challenges of working with expired film required special attention and skill. "When you're working with expired film, you usually have to tweak the developing process a bit to get any usable shots out of it," dontcountonmee explained. "I managed to develop the roll to get some photos, but the colors came out pretty different from what they probably looked like originally. I used a few editing programs to clean them up and get the results I posted on Reddit."

While he typically doesn't share his exploration findings online, the photographer felt compelled to post these particular images due to their emotional resonance. "I wasn't expecting the reaction I got," he continued, referring to the overwhelming response his posts received. His two posts on the subreddits r/abandoned and r/urbanexploration combined to garner nearly 90,000 upvotes from the Reddit community. "It was really cool to see that other people enjoyed [the photos] too."

The story serves as a reminder of both the fascinating discoveries that can be made in abandoned places and the important safety and legal considerations involved in urban exploration. Going into abandoned homes constitutes trespassing in many jurisdictions and comes with numerous risks, both concerning personal safety and potential legal consequences. Urban exploration should always be approached with extreme caution and a complete understanding of the possible dangers involved.
