Andrew Shearer, an Arts and Culture Reporter for the Athens Banner-Herald, has built a distinguished career in journalism spanning over two decades in Georgia. The Atlanta native first joined the Athens Banner-Herald staff in 1998, where he began his journey as a key member of the news production team.
Shearer expanded his role significantly in 2009 when he began writing a weekly film column for the publication. His passion for storytelling and media led him to develop his interview skills through an innovative approach – creating and hosting a podcast for OnlineAthens. This podcast project became a remarkable success, running for an impressive 600 episodes and establishing Shearer as a prominent voice in the Athens media landscape.
The spring of 2020 marked a pivotal moment in Shearer's career when he transitioned to a full-time reporter position for the Banner-Herald during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather than being deterred by the challenging circumstances, Shearer embraced the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on his community. He strategically used the unprecedented situation to focus on stories that would help maintain connections within the Athens community during a time of social distancing and isolation.
Throughout his career, Shearer has demonstrated a commitment to both the arts and his local community, combining his Atlanta roots with his deep understanding of Athens culture. His evolution from production team member to full-time arts and culture reporter reflects his dedication to journalism and his ability to adapt to changing media landscapes while maintaining a focus on community-centered storytelling.
