Herbert Brandl, one of Austria's most significant contemporary artists known for his intensely colorful paintings, has died at the age of 66. The painter gained fame starting in the 1980s as a representative of the "Neue Wilde" (New Wild Ones) movement and became recognized as one of the country's most important modern artists through his vibrant, color-intensive works.

Just this past spring, art enthusiasts had the opportunity to admire and virtually walk through a landscape created by Brandl. The artist had transformed beveled and tilted walls into a color-intensive relief rendered in red and green that extended through one of the three pavilions at Vienna's Heldenplatz. This immersive installation was part of the Steiermark Show, which made a two-week stop at the prestigious location to present new works by artists from Styria.

The exhibition featured works by prominent Styrian artists including Erwin Wurm and Hubert Schmalix, but naturally, Brandl's presence was essential to the show.
