Gallery Joeun exhibition presents 16 new works spanning painting, sculpture and installation

Gallery Joeun will present Kwon Yong Rae’s solo exhibition “BECOMING” from Oct. 1–31.

The exhibition brings together 16 new works developed through the artist’s longstanding examination of light and stainless steel. The pieces move between painting, sculpture and installation without settling within a single medium.

Kwon constructs his works by placing hundreds or thousands of flat stainless-steel units individually across a canvas. The metal components function as pictorial elements, forming images only as they reflect and disperse surrounding light.

Light therefore operates as part of the work rather than as an external condition of display. Changes in illumination and the viewer’s position continually alter the appearance of each surface.

The series “Eternal Flame” demonstrates this approach through arrangements of metal units that evoke the movement of fire. Instead of representing a fixed object, the works focus on the process through which light appears, shifts and disappears.

The exhibition title refers to this continual state of formation. Kwon’s works remain positioned between material and immaterial qualities, flat surfaces and three-dimensional space, and stable forms and changing visual phenomena.
