Projections across four ancient tombs trace the founding, growth and material culture of Silla

The 2026 National Heritage Media Art event is underway at the Daereungwon Tomb Complex in Gyeongju, presenting the history and excavated objects of the Silla kingdom through projection, lighting and digital imagery.

The event opened on Sept. 4 and runs through Sept. 27. Programs take place daily from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Titled “Daereungwon, Eternity—Beyond a Thousand Years,” the presentation uses four tombs as projection surfaces: the Tomb of King Michu, Hwangnamdaechong, Cheonmachong and Tomb No. 90.

The Tomb of King Michu section addresses the founding of Silla and the legend of the Bamboo Leaf Soldiers. Projections at Hwangnamdaechong depict the construction of the tomb and objects discovered inside, including gold crowns and Roman glassware.

Cheonmachong presents images of its 1973 excavation alongside the Heavenly Horse painting and gold crown. Tomb No. 90 traces a narrative extending from the beginning of Silla to present-day Gyeongju.

A path between the entrance and central plaza has been transformed into a “Forest of Light” using firefly-like illumination, lasers and fog. Additional programs include a nighttime guided tour incorporating Silla-era clothing, message-writing activities, LED crown making and an excavation-themed experience.

The opening performance, “Light Awakened from a Thousand-Year Sleep,” combined projections on Tomb No. 90 with pansori, musical theater, Korean dance and percussion. Its narrative featured figures including Queen Seondeok, Kim Yu Sin, King Munmu and the Buddhist monk Wonhyo.

The event is hosted by the Korea Heritage Service, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Gyeongju City, and organised by the Korea Heritage Agency and the Silla Cultural Heritage Research Institute. Advance booking may be required for selected programs.
