The highly anticipated mobile game Fantasia Sango Online, developed by Supercat and slated to be serviced by Nexon, has been officially discontinued. The decision comes just two months after a trial run at the G-Star 2024 event and a closed beta test (CBT).
Based on the classic RPG Fantasia Sango, the game aimed to reimagine the beloved intellectual property (IP) with modern mobile gaming trends. Its 2.5D graphics and fast-paced gameplay were highlights, bringing nostalgic elements of the original to a new generation of players. Development gained traction following a 2021 licensing agreement and a hiring push in 2023. However, despite strong initial interest, the project faced unexpected closure.
Supercat and Nexon explained the reasoning behind the decision in a joint statement: “We gathered extensive feedback from users during the November CBT and engaged in in-depth discussions. Ultimately, we concluded that it would be difficult to meet the expectations of players with the current direction of the game. Therefore, we have decided to cease development.”
The news disappointed fans who had been eagerly awaiting the game’s release, particularly after its showcase at G-Star 2024, where it featured a compelling storyline, mini-games, dungeons, and raid content. Despite positive feedback on certain aspects, both companies determined that the project fell short of its ambitious goals.
Supercat reassured stakeholders that the discontinuation of Fantasia Sango Online would not impact the development of The Kingdom of the Winds 2, another collaboration with Nexon. The company stated that work on the sequel to the popular MMORPG The Kingdom of the Winds: Yeon remains unaffected.
Founded in 2016, Supercat has established itself as a prominent developer with a strong partnership with Nexon. The release of The Kingdom of the Winds: Yeon in 2020 marked a significant milestone for the studio, utilizing Nexon’s IP to deliver a mobile MMORPG that continues to perform well. The studio’s ongoing collaboration with Nexon on The Kingdom of the Winds 2 signals their commitment to developing innovative titles within the MMORPG genre.
While Fantasia Sango Online has been shelved, the announcement underscores the challenges of balancing nostalgic appeal with modern gaming expectations. The industry will watch closely as Supercat and Nexon refine their approach in upcoming projects.
