From January 7 to February 7, 2025, artist Kim Dong Hyeong’s solo exhibition, The Time in Eternal Lines, is being held at Gallery We in Yongin. The exhibition presents a compelling exploration of time and materiality through architectural and natural elements, challenging traditional visual experiences with profound philosophical undertones.

Kim’s work stands out for its raw, textured surfaces, reminiscent of Brutalism's architectural aesthetic. His use of grid arrangements evokes a similarity to Korea's monochromatic painting movement of the 1970s, yet his practice extends further, capturing the marks of time etched onto the exterior of buildings. This unique approach reveals the interplay between the artificial and the natural, creating a dialogue that transcends visual art into a deeper reflection on impermanence and transformation.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is Kim’s latest series, #YYMMDDNNNN. This series marks a departure from his previous reliance on traditional Korean hanji paper. Instead, Kim employs layered colors to emphasize texture and the cyclical nature of time in the natural world. These layers culminate in a final application of white, symbolizing life and renewal, while simultaneously preserving traces of the process. The resulting works embody both the permanence and fleetingness of existence, resonating with viewers on a deeply emotional level.

Through his work, Kim offers audiences an opportunity to discover rhythm and meaning unique to their own experiences. Each piece encourages introspection, allowing visitors to compare their interpretations with the artist’s intentions. This interactive engagement not only enriches the appreciation of Kim’s work but also deepens the audience’s connection to art as a medium for personal and collective exploration.

By stripping away excess and focusing on essential elements, Kim creates a platform for audiences to form their relationships with his work. His use of texture and form, combined with the symbolism of time and nature, transforms each piece into a reflective mirror of the human condition. This dialogue between the viewer and the artwork underlines Kim’s belief in art’s ability to connect deeply with individuals, offering both a personal and universal perspective.

As Kim Dong Hyeong pushes the boundaries of traditional mediums and concepts, The Time in Eternal Lines serves as a testament to his innovative vision. The exhibition invites viewers to immerse themselves in the layered complexities of his work, offering an evocative and transformative artistic experience. For those seeking to explore the intersection of architecture, time, and nature through art, this exhibition is not to be missed.
