Taiwanese actor Darren Wang (33) has been arrested on charges of attempted murder, following allegations of military evasion.
According to Taiwanese media outlets ET Today and SET News, Wang was taken into custody on the morning of the 4th for investigation regarding an attempted murder case. The arrest marks a significant escalation in his legal troubles, which initially began with a military service evasion scandal.
The case stems from an incident last year when Wang reportedly had a dispute with an Uber driver. Allegedly, he instructed a wealthy acquaintance to physically assault the driver, who sustained severe injuries.
Authorities uncovered evidence of this attack while investigating Wang for his military evasion case. Police reportedly obtained messages from Wang’s phone that suggest he orchestrated the assault, as well as video footage of the attack.
Wang was previously arrested on February 18 for allegedly forging medical documents to evade mandatory military service. He was released on bail at the time, but this new charge could have serious legal repercussions.
His scheduled military enlistment is now uncertain. Wang was set to begin one year of alternative service at a military training facility in Taichung on the 13th. However, depending on the investigation’s outcome, his enlistment may be postponed.
Wang rose to fame with the 2016 film Our Times, which gained popularity in South Korea as well. He also starred in A Better Tomorrow 2018 and Fall in Love at First Kiss (原来是美男).
As legal proceedings unfold, the scandal is sending shockwaves through the Taiwanese entertainment industry, with questions looming over the future of Wang’s career.
