A charming all-timber cottage in Broken Head has been transformed into a stylish modern retreat through a thoughtful renovation by interior design practice Studio Isaza. The design firm was given nearly complete creative freedom to refresh the home, which possessed natural charm but required updates to enhance its beauty, functionality, and connection to its stunning rainforest surroundings.
The renovation drew its inspiration from the homeowners' personal tastes and lifestyle preferences. The clients' love for mid-century furniture, vibrant colors, photography, and music became the driving force behind the design direction, setting a clear tone for the project's aesthetic vision.
Studio Isaza founder Jana Isaza-Smith embraced these client preferences while adding her own design expertise to the mix. "I was influenced by mid-century design with its linear elements, color palette, and focus on timber joinery," Isaza-Smith explained. "I wanted the space to feel masculine whilst at the same time bringing a sense of softness that was missing before." The designer successfully incorporated quirky and nostalgic elements while maintaining a calm and contemporary atmosphere throughout the home.
The renovation involved significant updates to the cottage's flooring and overall aesthetic. Worn carpet and outdated tiles were completely removed and replaced with beautiful blonde timber floors that effectively bounce natural light throughout the interior spaces. This flooring choice was particularly strategic, as the home is naturally shaded by the lush trees that surround the property, making light reflection crucial for creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere.
Major structural improvements were made to the kitchen and bathroom areas to enhance both functionality and style. The kitchen underwent a complete rebuild to incorporate significantly more storage solutions, addressing the practical needs of modern living. Meanwhile, the bathroom was entirely reconfigured to accommodate a generous, spacious shower that provides a luxurious bathing experience.
The design scheme features a carefully curated blend of materials and colors that reflect the mid-century aesthetic. Colorful mid-century inspired tiles serve as playful yet sophisticated design elements throughout the space. These vibrant tiles are expertly paired with sleek stainless steel benchtops and custom spotted gum joinery that creates a seamless visual connection with the home's existing timber-paneled walls.
The completed renovation successfully preserves the cottage's original character while meeting contemporary living standards. "The new alterations sit comfortably within the original timber cottage, embracing the home's nature, rather than resisting it," Jana noted with satisfaction. The designer expressed particular pride in specific material combinations, stating, "The stainless steel with butter yellow tiles and spotted gum joinery feels especially good."
The transformation has resulted in a home that perfectly balances old and new design elements. Isaza-Smith reflected on the project's success, saying, "I'm most proud that the updates add quiet sophistication, without losing the cottage's charm and cozy spirit." The pared-back cottage now serves as a delightful living space that honors both its architectural origins and the clients' distinctive personal style, creating a harmonious blend of past and present design sensibilities.
