Debate Emerges on Whether Public Reaction Is Unfair or Warranted

The "kalguksu controversy" involving Minji, a 19-year-old member of the rising K-pop group NewJeans, has resurfaced, sparking discussions on the challenges faced by K-pop stars and the public's expectations.

Nearly a year after the initial incident, where Minji apologized for a moment in a January 2023 YouTube video questioning the popular Korean dish kalguksu, the issue has gained renewed attention. Some interpreted her inquiry about the dish as an attempt to portray herself as unfamiliar with the food of ordinary people, leading to accusations of insensitivity.

Despite her explanation, some online users criticized her for using what they perceived as a "sharp and annoyed tone." In response, Minji issued a public apology on the fan communication app, Phoning, expressing regret for any discomfort caused by her attitude during the livestream.

In her apology, Minji clarified that her initial question about kalguksu was due to her status as a picky eater who had never tried the dish before. She admitted to speaking impulsively to herself and expressed frustration over the prolonged misunderstanding, committing to being more mindful in the future.

Public opinion remains divided, with some arguing that Minji's apology was unnecessary for a trivial matter and empathizing with the challenges of being a K-pop star in the spotlight. Others felt her tone on the livestream warranted an apology, citing a perceived aggressiveness despite her clarification efforts.

The incident highlights the scrutiny and pressure faced by K-pop stars, as they navigate the delicate balance between public perception and personal expression within the celebrity culture.
