Portuguese architectural studio há.atelier has completed the Cereal Interpretation Center, a 210-square-meter adaptive reuse project located in the historic locality of Santa Eufémia, near the village of Espinhal in Portugal. The project, completed in 2024, represents a thoughtful transformation of an existing structure into a cultural and educational facility.
The interpretation center is situated in a region renowned for its high cultural and historical significance due to its ancient heritage. Santa Eufémia, surrounded by natural landscapes, is particularly known for its traditional watermills, which stand as prominent attractions that reflect the area's agricultural and milling history.
The architectural intervention by há.atelier demonstrates a careful approach to adaptive reuse, preserving the character of the original structure while creating a contemporary space for visitors to learn about cereal production and local agricultural traditions. The project serves as both an educational facility and a cultural landmark that celebrates the region's historical connection to grain processing.
Photographer José Campos documented the completed project, capturing how the modern intervention harmonizes with the historic context of the surrounding area. The center provides visitors with interpretive experiences that connect them to the traditional agricultural practices that have shaped this Portuguese region for centuries.
The Cereal Interpretation Center represents há.atelier's commitment to contextual architecture that respects local heritage while meeting contemporary functional requirements. The project contributes to the preservation and celebration of Portugal's rural cultural landscape and traditional agricultural knowledge.
