Gwangju’s Buk-gu district is set to honor novelist Han Kang’s historic Nobel Prize in Literature win with a special event titled Night of Literature with Biennale Media Facade. The celebration will take place on December 10, coinciding with the Nobel ceremony, at the Gwangju Biennale Plaza and Geosigi Hall.

The event will feature a diverse program, beginning with a celebratory performance based on music composed from Han Kang’s writings. A reading of her acclaimed novel Human Acts (소년이 온다) will follow, immersing the audience in her evocative storytelling. The evening will conclude with the release of sky lanterns, symbolizing hope and inspiration.

The venue will also host interactive zones such as a manuscript-copying station (필사존) and a photo zone, offering attendees opportunities to engage more deeply with the themes of literature. Additionally, a space dedicated to promoting local independent bookstores will be set up, further emphasizing the cultural significance of literature in the community.

Buk-gu Mayor Moon In emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “This is a monumental accomplishment, not only as the first Asian female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature but also as a moment of pride for Buk-gu and the entire nation. We aim to foster creative opportunities for aspiring writers in collaboration with the local community.”

Han Kang, a native of Buk-gu, is known for her poetic prose and exploration of themes such as human suffering, resilience, and the complexities of the human spirit. Her Nobel win has sparked renewed interest in her works and South Korean literature as a whole.

The Night of Literature aims to celebrate her achievements while inspiring the next generation of writers. The event underscores the region’s commitment to nurturing artistic and literary talent, establishing Gwangju as a significant cultural hub in South Korea.

The celebration promises to be a vibrant blend of art, literature, and community spirit, reflecting the transformative power of storytelling and its ability to connect individuals across boundaries.
