Photographer Yu Hwa-jung’s solo exhibition Faces of All Things is running at Come Amico Gallery through Oct. 27.
The exhibition brings together film photographs of people, animals and natural environments. Rather than presenting them as separate subjects, Yu approaches each as a living presence occupying the same world.
The project considers how humans categorise themselves in relation to animals and nature. Although these forms of life are often treated as distinct, the exhibition focuses on their similarities and the connections that exist across those divisions.
Yu combines photographs with written texts to examine how people look at beings different from themselves. The works raise questions about the limits of understanding and respect, as well as the attitudes required to live alongside other forms of life.
Faces serve as the exhibition’s central point of connection. Human and animal subjects appear with different expressions, appearances and ways of living, while images of nature broaden the idea of a face beyond the individual portrait. Together, the photographs present life as a network of relationships rather than a hierarchy centred on humans.
Yu has worked with film photography for eight years, documenting people, animals and nature. Her personal engagement with vegetarianism and her decision not to eat meat for the past five years also form part of the perspective underlying the exhibition.
Faces of All Things is presented as a venue-hire exhibition at Come Amico Gallery. Yu will remain at the gallery throughout the exhibition period.
The exhibition runs through Oct. 27 and is open daily from noon to 6 p.m. Admission is free.
