Saekdonghoe will hold a children’s song concert marking the 127th anniversary of the birth of Bang Jeong-hwan, a pioneer of Korea’s children’s rights and cultural movement.
The event, titled A Children’s Song Festival for Three Generations, will begin at 2 p.m. on Nov. 7 in the main conference hall of the National Assembly Members’ Office Building in Seoul.
Saekdonghoe is organising the programme with the Korean Senior Citizens Association, the Korean Constitutional Association and the office of lawmaker Kwak Sang-eon.
Participants will include family teams comprising three generations, the family of Korean Constitutional Association President Chung Dae-chul and a choir from the Philippine Embassy led by Ambassador Bernadette Therese C. Fernandez.
Families of North Korean defectors, the Saekdong Children’s Choir, teams representing the Korean Senior Citizens Association, the K-Yodel Choir and the Jungnang Silver Choir will also perform.
The Sound of Love, described as the world’s first yodelling choir composed of visually impaired singers, is scheduled to take part in the event.
Popera singer Lim Hyung-joo will receive the fourth K-Beautiful Song Award during the programme. The award is organised by Saekdonghoe and the Korea Bandal Culture Institute.
Founded in 1923 around Bang Jeong-hwan, who was known by his pen name Sopa, Saekdonghoe was Korea’s first organisation dedicated to the children’s cultural movement. It worked to promote respect for children, establish Children’s Day and expand the distribution of children’s songs and stories.
“Children’s songs have the power to connect people across generations,” said Lee Eun-kyung, senior vice chairperson of Saekdonghoe. “We hope children, parents and grandparents can sing together, rediscover the innocence of childhood and share laughter and happiness.”
