Outdoor and indoor screenings to take place across two venues in Gangneung
Four-day festival combines seaside outdoor cinema with theater screenings

According to SayArt on August 6, the 28th Jeongdongjin Independent Film Festival will take place from August 7 to 10 in Gangneung, Gangwon Province. The festival will be held at the outdoor screening venue of Jeongdong Elementary School and Gangneung's Independent Art Theater Shinyoung, presenting a total of 27 Korean independent feature and short films.

The Jeongdongjin Independent Film Festival has developed as a regional film event that combines the coastal landscape, the nearby railway station, and open-air cinema. It continues to provide a meeting place for independent filmmakers and audiences while maintaining its signature outdoor screening format alongside conventional theater presentations.

Outdoor screenings will run from August 7 through August 9 at Jeongdong Elementary School. Theater screenings at Independent Art Theater Shinyoung will continue from August 8 through August 10. The dual-venue program offers audiences different viewing environments throughout the festival.

This year's program features 27 Korean independent films, including both feature-length and short works. The lineup is expected to present a broad view of recent trends in Korea's independent film production across multiple genres and formats.

The Gangneung municipal government said it expects the festival to contribute to local tourism during the summer season and support regional arts and cultural activities. Hong Sam-nyeo, head of the city's Culture and Arts Division, said the event reflects both the regional identity of Gangneung and the characteristics of Korean independent cinema, expressing hope that residents and visitors will have opportunities to experience independent films during the festival.

Festival organizers said the program was designed to combine the atmosphere of outdoor screenings with the immersive experience of indoor theaters. The event is expected to be viewed as an example of linking regional cultural programming with independent film exhibition.
