A-ARTIST exhibition combines painting and installation at Suseong Artpia through Sept. 20

Artist Ha Ji Won is presenting the solo exhibition “Roller Coaster at Midnight” at Suseong Artpia in Daegu.

Running from Sept. 3–20 in Gallery 2, the exhibition is the fourth presentation in the venue’s 2026 A-ARTIST programme, an open-call initiative supporting artists based in the region.

Ha has developed a practice centred on dismantling paintings and reorganising their fragments. Rather than treating a completed canvas as a fixed result, she uses traces of previous compositions as material for new paintings and spatial installations.

The exhibition takes the atmosphere of an amusement park at night as its starting point. Illuminated rides and repeated movement coexist with the surrounding silence, creating a setting positioned between familiar reality and an unfamiliar dream. The roller coaster’s cycle of ascent and descent functions as a metaphor for shifting emotions including anticipation, anxiety, pleasure and disappointment.

Fragments of dismantled paintings extend beyond the walls to form structures within the gallery. Empty areas between the works become routes through which visitors move, allowing the composition of the exhibition to change according to each viewer’s position and line of sight.

Ha’s recent work also draws on experiences of play and movement from her daily life with her child. By incorporating chance and physical participation, she invites visitors to connect the installation with their own memories and emotional responses.

An artist talk will be held at 5 p.m. on Sept. 10. Ha will discuss her methods of dismantling and reconstruction with art historian and former Solol Museum director Kim Seok Mo. The free programme is limited to 15 participants.

The exhibition is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free.
