Broadcaster Kim Na Jung has been apprehended on suspicion of drug use after testing positive for methamphetamine. According to police reports, Kim returned from Manila, Philippines, on November 12, landing at Incheon International Airport, where airport police immediately questioned her for two hours. Following the initial interrogation, Kim underwent a preliminary drug test, which revealed a positive result for methamphetamine. The case has since been transferred to the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency due to her residence in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province.
The Gyeonggi police confirmed Kim’s non-custodial booking on charges of violating South Korea’s Narcotics Control Act. Authorities have announced a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her alleged drug use, including potential suppliers and possible accomplices.
Kim’s involvement in this case first gained public attention when she posted an alarming message on her social media, which she claimed to have used drugs in the Philippines. Alongside a photo of the Conrad Hotel lobby in Manila, she wrote, “This is the Conrad Hotel in Manila. I am facing a life-threatening situation,” and requested assistance.
Kim’s statement quickly escalated, with further revelations about her experience in the Philippines. She alleged that she had discarded her luggage and opted to avoid Korean Air to evade what she described as a “drug trafficking situation.” Additionally, she confessed to having used drugs in the Philippines, stating, “I am surrendering for drug use in the Philippines.” Kim deleted the messages shortly after posting these claims, but they rapidly circulated online. Some users reported her posts to the authorities, prompting the police to question her upon arrival in Korea.
Born in 1992, Kim Na Jung gained prominence as a weather presenter, reporter, and announcer across various broadcasting networks in South Korea. Her popularity surged after participating in the 2019 Maxim Contest, which led to appearances on several entertainment programs, solidifying her status in the media industry.
Police investigations are now focused on understanding the motivations and details behind her alleged drug use, as well as whether she acted alone or in coordination with others.
