[Sayart = Maria Kim] Seungtaik Jang, a prominent figure in Korean abstract art, presents his solo exhibition Layered Painting at Hakgojae Gallery in Seoul through May 31. The exhibition showcases his renowned “Layered Painting” series, exploring new dimensions of painting through the accumulation of color, time, and sensory perception.
Born in 1959, Jang has developed a unique visual language within the trajectory of Korean abstract art. Moving beyond traditional painting materials, he employs unconventional media such as air spray, resin, and glass to create experimental color field abstractions. Using brushes over one meter in width, he applies bold strokes and layers various colors repeatedly. This process of overlapping brushwork and color imbues the canvas with depth and temporality, visualizing layers of emotion, memory, and time.
The exhibition features large-scale paintings created between 2022 and 2024, including notable works such as Layered Painting 150-21 (2022, 220×170cm), Layered Painting 130-46 (2024, 200×150cm), and Layered Painting 100-97 (2023, 160×130cm), all executed in acrylic on canvas. These works experiment with visual rhythm and spatial perception through repeated brushstrokes and transparent layers, offering viewers an experience of visualizing layers of emotion, memory, and time.
Jang states, “I aim to capture the flow created by the accumulation of moments, rather than depicting a single instant.” His work functions not merely as physical layering but as a device to visualize the stratification of emotion, memory, and time. Through repeated brushwork and color layering, he imparts depth and temporality to the canvas, visualizing layers of emotion, memory, and time.
Hakgojae Gallery, established in 1988, has been a leading institution in Korean contemporary art, bridging tradition and modernity, East and West. This solo exhibition by Seungtaik Jang offers a significant opportunity to reflect on the past, present, and future of Korean abstract art.
