Students from Didier Salvan's art workshop are displaying their sculptures and drawings at the Sainte-Marthe Chapel in Montbron through December 21. The exhibition opening will take place on Friday, December 5 at 6 p.m., featuring works created by students alongside pieces by their instructor.
The student artists come from Salvan's workshop, which is located at the Moulin de la Pierre in Vilhonneur. They have transformed the historic Sainte-Marthe Chapel into a gallery space, showcasing their artistic creations alongside several pieces presented by their master teacher. The exhibition represents a collaborative effort between the experienced sculptor and his dedicated students.
Didier Salvan, who serves as both instructor and featured artist in the exhibition, specializes in hard stone carving techniques. His artistic process involves working with natural stone blocks that he personally collects from various locations in nature. These materials are gathered from riverbeds, including both Pyrenean rivers and the local Tardoire River, providing him with diverse textures and compositions for his sculptures.
The master sculptor employs traditional stone-carving methods in his artistic practice. Salvan works directly on the stone using classic tools including a chisel and hammer, shaping each piece through careful and precise cuts. Following the initial carving process, each sculpture undergoes an extensive polishing phase, which requires considerable time and patience to achieve the final smooth finish that characterizes his work.
