Austrian Architects Complete Innovative Secondary School Design in Graz's Reininghaus District

Sayart / Dec 4, 2025

The architectural firm Janser Castorina Katzenberger has completed construction of the AHS Reininghaus Secondary School, a striking new educational facility designed to accommodate 1,000 students in Graz, Austria. The project, finished in 2024, represents a significant addition to the newly developed Reininghaus district and showcases innovative approaches to modern school design.

The four-story structure extends in a distinctive L-shaped configuration along Am Steinfeld and Margarethe-Schütte-Lihotzky-Straße streets, strategically positioned to form the northeastern boundary of Quartier 12. This placement serves a dual purpose, providing both architectural definition to the neighborhood while creating an effective noise barrier for the residential areas beyond.

One of the most notable features of the design is the central stepping pattern toward the southwest, which effectively breaks up what could have been a monolithic building mass. This architectural decision creates a dynamic sequence of terraced incisions that not only add visual interest but also provide outdoor spaces and natural light penetration throughout the structure.

The school's design reflects contemporary educational philosophy, moving away from traditional institutional architecture toward more open, flexible learning environments. The building's form and orientation have been carefully considered to maximize natural lighting while minimizing environmental impact on the surrounding community.

Photography of the completed project was captured by Federico Cairoli, whose images highlight the building's integration with the urban landscape and its innovative architectural elements. The project has been recognized as a significant contribution to Austria's educational infrastructure and represents the evolving standards of 21st-century school design.

The AHS Reininghaus Secondary School stands as a testament to thoughtful urban planning and architectural innovation, demonstrating how modern educational facilities can serve both their primary function and contribute positively to community development in rapidly growing urban districts.
