The performances will take place at the renowned Sori Arts Center as well as venues across 14 cities and counties throughout North Jeolla Province, making the festival accessible to a wide geographic audience.
The festival will open with a spectacular production of "Simcheong," created in collaboration with the National Changgeuk Company of Korea. This innovative interpretation takes a bold departure from the traditional folk tale that typically centers on themes of filial piety and self-sacrifice. Instead, this reimagined version presents the character of the filial daughter as a powerful symbol representing socially vulnerable populations who have faced oppression and have been systematically deprived of their voices and power.
The production is both written and directed by Yona Kim, an accomplished opera stage director who has built her career primarily in Germany. Kim brings her extensive operatic experience to this work while ensuring it remains deeply rooted in Korean cultural traditions, creating a unique fusion of international theatrical expertise and Korean storytelling heritage.
Among the festival's other major highlights is "Five Pansori Stories," which will feature some of Korea's most celebrated pansori artists performing the five surviving works of this traditional narrative song form. Additionally, singer-songwriter Song So-hee, who has established herself as a leading voice in the Gyeonggi folk singing tradition, will showcase her continuously expanding musical world, demonstrating how traditional forms can evolve and grow.
The festival will conclude with a particularly moving performance by Ahn Eun Me Company's "Dancing Grandmothers." This joyful and heartwarming production serves as a celebration and homage to elderly women throughout Korea. Since 2011, choreographer Ahn Eun Me has been collecting and documenting the spontaneous dance movements of these women, transforming their natural expressions of joy into a formalized performance that honors their spirit and vitality.
