Korean Stars Shine at MTV Video Music Awards Japan

Cha Eun-woo, NewJeans, NiziU, The Boyz, and Stray Kids Clinch Major Honors

Korean artists dominated the MTV Video Music Awards Japan (MTV VMAJ) on Wednesday, with notable K-pop acts, including Cha Eun-woo, NewJeans, NiziU, The Boyz, and Stray Kids, securing significant accolades.

Cha Eun-woo from the boy band Astro made history by winning the Global Icon Award, marking the first time an Asian artist has received this honor. In a statement from his agency Fantagio, Cha expressed gratitude to his fandom, Aroha, stating, "I will show a wonderful side of myself as a way to repay everyone's encouragement."

NewJeans, a girl group, received the Best Buzz Award for their impactful videos and songs released between October 1, 2022, and September 30, 2023.

The Best Pop Video award went to girl group NiziU for their track "Paradise."

In the Best Asia Group category, The Boyz emerged victorious, while Stray Kids secured the Best Group Video award in the international category.

The MTV VMAJ, equivalent to the U.S. MTV Video Music Awards, began in 2002 and is currently in its 22nd year. The awards ceremony took place at Yokohama K Arena.

The event commenced with a performance by NCT New Team, a subunit of the boy band NCT, set to debut in 2024. Additionally, actor Cha Eun-woo graced the awards ceremony stage with a performance of "Saying Goodbye to My Favorite Person."
