2024, June 30th- Mother-of-pearl is a shiny material found inside certain seashells. It has a pretty, rainbow-like look and is used to make things like jewelry, decorations, and musical instruments because of its beauty.
Mother-of-pearl holds significant cultural and historical importance in Korea. In Korean culture, mother-of-pearl has been used for centuries to adorn various traditional crafts and artworks, particularly in the crafting of lacquerware, known as najeonchilgi.
Najeonchilgi involves applying thin layers of lacquer onto wooden surfaces and then inlaying intricate designs made from mother-of-pearl. These designs often depict natural motifs, such as flowers, birds, and landscapes, as well as auspicious symbols like dragons and phoenixes. The mother-of-pearl inlays add a luminous and elegant touch to the finished pieces.
Korean artisans have mastered the art of najeonchilgi over generations, and it has become highly prized both domestically and internationally as a symbol of Korean craftsmanship and culture. Today, traditional najeonchilgi items, such as jewelry boxes, chests, screens, and ornaments, are treasured as works of art and are often passed down as heirlooms.
As Korea represents mother-of-pearl, Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol presented a mother-of-pearl moon jar to U.S. President Joe Biden.
The father of artist Jian Yoo, who created this special mother-of-pearl moon jar, is Cheongbong Yoo Cheol-hyeon.
It is said that he ran a mother-of-pearl lacquerware workshop and trained artisans. I began to naturally encounter mother-of-pearl thanks to my father, but when I was studying design in New York, I saw a bamboo craft exhibition by Japanese artists, and after seeing that luxury brands regarded mother-of-pearl as a precious gem, I decided to introduce mother-of-pearl to foreigners with my own new perspective. It is said that it started with a resolve to introduce.
Artist Jian Yoo said, "I chose mother-of-pearl, which has endured a long time in the sea to express the moonlight, waves, and sunrise. Mother-of-pearl, which embraces the flow of time, is a material that shows everything from the past to the present, and combines tradition and modernity, East and West. They say they want to show temporality, connectivity, newness and creativity by going back and forth.
The reason for saying this is that although the shape is a moon jar, it cannot be made from clay in a size larger than 1m because mother-of-pearl must be attached, so instead of making it with clay, it is made with a modern industrial material called FRP, which is used in making cars and yachts, and on top of it, He explains that the mother-of-pearl is cut into small pieces, glued together, and then goes through a coating process like coloring a car. “Because we cover modern materials with seashells that have been around for a long time, the expression and result are modern art, and the working process is a traditional way of making handicrafts,” he said.
Her goal, she says, is to have Jian Yoo come to mind when she wakes up.

나전칠기는 나무 표면에 옻칠을 얇게 바르고 자개로 복잡한 문양을 새기는 작업입니다. 이러한 디자인은 종종 꽃, 새, 풍경과 같은 자연적인 모티브뿐만 아니라 용과 봉황과 같은 상서로운 상징을 묘사합니다. 마더 오브 펄 인레이는 완성된 작품에 빛나고 우아한 느낌을 더해줍니다.
한국 장인들은 세대를 거쳐 나전칠기 기술을 익혔으며, 나전칠기는 한국 장인정신과 문화의 상징으로 국내외에서 높은 평가를 받고 있습니다. 오늘날 보석함, 상자, 병풍, 장신구 등 전통 나전칠기 물품은 예술작품으로 소중히 여겨지며 가보로 전해지는 경우가 많습니다.
한국이 자개를 대표하는 만큼 한국의 윤석열 대통령은 미국의 조바이든 대통령에게 자개달항아리를 선물 했습니다.
이렇게 특별한 자개 달항아리를 제작 한 류지안 작가의 아버지는 청봉 유철현 작가님으로
나전칠기 공방을 운영하며 장인을 양성하셨다고 합니다. 아버지 덕분에 자연스럽게 자개를 접한 것이 시작이었지만, 뉴욕에서 디자인을 공부하던 시절 일본인 작가들의 죽공예 전시회를 본 후에 럭셔리 브랜드들이 귀한 보석으로 자개를 여기는 것 을 보고 본인만의 새로운 시각으로 자개를 외국인들에게 소개 해 보자는 다짐에서 시작되었다고 합니다
류지안 작가는 "달빛과 파도, 윤슬을 표현하기 위해 바다에서 긴 시간을 견뎌온 자개를 선택했습니다. 시간의 흐름을 품고 있는 자개야 말로 과거부터 현재를 다 보여주는 소재이며, 전통과 현대, 동양과 서양을 오가며 시간성과 연결성, 새로움과 창의성을 보여주고 싶다, 고 합니다.
이렇게 말한 이유는, 형태는 달 항아리이지만, 자개를 붙여야 하기 때문에 흙으로 1m가 넘는 크기를 빚을 수 없기 때문에 흙으로 빚지 않고 자동차나 요트를 만들 때 사용하는 FRP라는 현대산업재료로 제작하고 그 위에 자개를 잘게 잘라 붙인 뒤, 자동차 색 입히듯 코팅 과정을 거친다고 설명합니다. 오랜 시간을 품은 조개껍질로 현대적 소재를 덧씌우기 때문에 표현방식과 결과물은 현대예술이고 작업과정은 수공예품을 만드는 전통방식인 셈입니다 라고 말했습니다. 그녀의 목표는, 자개 하면 류지안을 떠오르게 하는 것이 라고 이야기합니다.
