Sayart / Aug 8, 2025

The Federal Real Estate Company (BIG) has officially announced an international architecture competition for the development of Campus Althangrund, a major educational facility that will be built on the site of the former Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) in Vienna's Alsergrund district. European Union architectural firms have until December to submit their design proposals for this ambitious project.

The new educational campus will occupy an impressive footprint of approximately 60,000 square meters on the grounds of the old Economics University. Construction of the Campus Althangrund is scheduled to begin in 2027, marking the start of a significant transformation of this historic educational site in Vienna.

Once completed, the campus will serve as home to multiple prestigious educational institutions. Starting in 2032, various institutes from the University of Vienna and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) will relocate to the new facility. Additionally, the campus will house both an Academic Secondary School (AHS) and a Higher Technical Institute (HTL), creating a comprehensive educational hub.

The competition represents a major opportunity for architectural firms across the European Union to participate in shaping Vienna's educational landscape. The December deadline for submissions gives architects several months to develop comprehensive proposals for this large-scale project that will significantly impact the city's academic infrastructure for decades to come.
