The South Korean disaster thriller film "Concrete Utopia" has made a seismic impact at the local box office, captivating audiences and drawing over 1 million moviegoers during its debut weekend, as revealed by data on Monday.
From Friday through Sunday, the movie enticed a remarkable 1.12 million viewers, contributing to an impressive 53.4 percent of total ticket sales, according to statistics from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC).
Since its release on August 9, the film has garnered a cumulative audience of 1.54 million viewers, solidifying its position as a cinematic sensation.
The movie, featuring powerhouse actors Lee Byung-hun, Park Seo-joon, and Park Bo-young, envelops viewers in a gripping disaster thriller narrative. Set in the aftermath of a catastrophic earthquake in Seoul, the story revolves around the inhabitants of the sole apartment building to survive the devastation. United in their fight for survival, they navigate a perilous journey against all odds.
Director Ryoo Seung-wan's crime action thriller "Smugglers," which previously held the top spot for two consecutive weeks, descended to second place, amassing 425,000 admissions during the weekend.
With its release on July 26, "Smugglers" has successfully amassed a staggering 4.35 million admissions, surpassing its critical break-even point of 4 million.
Securing the third position was Pixar Animation Studios' "Elemental," drawing 192,000 viewers over the cited period. The animated marvel has captivated a total of 6.64 million audiences since its release on June 14.
"Ransomed," a gripping Korean action film rooted in the true tale of a hostage crisis in Lebanon, clinched the fourth rank, followed closely by "The Moon," a Korean space survival drama that rounded off the weekend's box office rankings.
