Renowned actor Lee Sun-kyun, globally recognized for his role in the Cannes award-winning film "Parasite," was discovered dead at the age of 48 on Wednesday. The apparent suicide occurred amidst an ongoing investigation into allegations of illegal drug use.

The police were notified by the actor's manager at approximately 10:12 a.m. on Wednesday, reporting that Lee had left his home a day earlier, leaving behind a suicide note, and had not returned. Authorities discovered him in his car near a park in Jongno District, central Seoul, around 10:30 a.m., with signs of an attempted suicide.

Despite efforts, Lee was confirmed dead at the scene and was not transported to a hospital for treatment. His body was subsequently taken to Seoul National University Hospital.

Lee's agency, HODU&U Entertainment, confirmed his passing and expressed profound sorrow. The agency requested the public to refrain from spreading false information and announced that the funeral would be held privately with his family and friends.

The actor had been under investigation since October regarding allegations of illegal drug use. On October 19, the police identified eight individuals suspected of drug use, including Lee, who was later summoned for questioning. He consistently denied using marijuana and other illegal substances.

Lee tested negative for drugs in multiple tests, including a cursory test during initial police questioning and another conducted by the National Forensic Service. He filed a complaint against the hostess who accused him, alleging blackmail related to his purported drug use.

After an extensive third round of questioning lasting 19 hours on Sunday, Lee requested a polygraph test to affirm his innocence.

Lee Sun-kyun, who debuted in the musical "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" in 2001, gained prominence for lead roles in hit series like "Behind the White Tower" (2007) and "Pasta" (2010). His global recognition soared after his role in Bong Joon-ho's acclaimed film "Parasite," earning him accolades at the 26th Screen Actors Guild Award.
