Kunshan City Square Undergoes Major Transformation with New Underground Facilities and Redesigned Landscape

Sayart / Dec 1, 2025

The Kunshan City Square, located in front of the Municipal Government building in Suzhou, China, has completed a comprehensive transformation that began in 2022. The ambitious renovation project included the integration of a new subway station along with extensive underground retail and parking facilities, fundamentally changing both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of this important public space.

Dazhou and Associates, a prominent architectural firm led by Dazhou Tang, was commissioned to design the landscape architecture for the above-ground areas of the 531 square meter project. The design team, which included Yilei Jin and Mingxiao Wu, worked closely with lighting consultant Chudi Tang and structural consultant Chongchong Zhang to create a cohesive and visually striking public space that serves the needs of both residents and visitors.

The new landscape design carefully preserves the original cross-axis structure that has long defined the city square's layout. This respectful approach to the existing urban fabric demonstrates a thoughtful balance between modernization and historical continuity. The architects strategically placed a prominent water feature along the central axis, creating a focal point that draws visitors into the space and provides a sense of tranquility in the bustling urban environment.

A large grass slope complements the water feature, offering residents a green space for relaxation and informal gatherings. These two major landscape elements effectively divide the square into four distinct sections, each serving different functions while maintaining visual coherence across the entire site. The sectioned design allows for multiple activities to occur simultaneously without interference, maximizing the square's utility for the community.

The project was developed under the oversight of Kunshan City Construction Investment and Development Group Co., Ltd., ensuring that the renovation met both municipal standards and community needs. Photography of the completed project was captured by Zhangyue Liu and Fangfang Tian, documenting the successful integration of contemporary design elements with the square's traditional urban context.

The transformation represents a significant investment in public infrastructure that addresses the growing needs of Kunshan's expanding population. By incorporating underground commercial and transportation facilities while enhancing the above-ground public space, the project demonstrates how urban renewal can successfully balance practical necessities with aesthetic considerations. The completed square now serves as a model for similar urban redevelopment projects throughout China, showcasing how thoughtful design can revitalize important civic spaces while respecting their historical significance.
