Korean installation artist Choi Goen has been awarded the 2024 Artist Award and her work will be exhibited at the Frieze Seoul art fair, as announced by the organizers on Monday. The third edition of the international art fair is scheduled to take place from September 4 to 7 at Coex in southern Seoul, featuring approximately 110 galleries from around the world. The event is held in collaboration with Kiaf Seoul, a prominent local art fair.
The Artist Award, according to Frieze Seoul, provides an opportunity for emerging or mid-career artists to create and exhibit a new body of work at the fair. Choi’s art involves repurposing everyday objects such as furniture, home appliances, and pipes, transforming them into sculptures and installations that interact with the exhibition space.

Choi’s winning commission will include two large-scale sculptures titled "White Home Wall: Welcome" and "Gloria." These pieces will incorporate discarded industrial elements to explore themes related to the materiality of technology. The award and Choi's project are supported by Bulgari.
Patrick Lee, director of Frieze Seoul, expressed enthusiasm about the award, stating, "I am delighted that the Artist Award at Frieze Seoul remains a cornerstone of our programming for a second year. We are privileged to showcase artists of Goen's caliber at Frieze Seoul, and eagerly anticipate our audience discovering more about her remarkable work."
The selection jury for the award included Sungah Serena Choo, curator at Leeum Museum of Art; artist Jeon Joon-ho; Kim Sung-woo, curator and director at Primary Practice; and Yung Ma, senior curator at Hayward Gallery.
Last year's inaugural Artist Award at Frieze Seoul was won by Korean installation artist Woo Hannah, who presented "The Great Ballroom" at the fair.
