A century-old granary that stood abandoned for two decades in Kerala, India, has been thoughtfully transformed into a stunning boutique farmhouse called Kalam by Episode Architects. The 1,000-square-foot renovation project, completed in 2025, represents a remarkable example of adaptive reuse that breathes new life into forgotten structures while preserving their historical character.
Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Western Ghats mountain range and nestled between lush paddy fields and a serene pond, Kalam embodies rustic charm and timeless beauty. Lead architect Malavika TS and her technical team, including Vignesh TS, approached the project with a clear vision: not to demolish and replace, but to revive and transform what already existed into something purposeful, sustainable, culturally rooted, and community-driven.
The architectural team made strategic additions to enhance functionality while respecting the original structure. A new veranda and bathroom were carefully integrated into the existing building, with every design decision aimed at preserving the granary's authentic character. The spatial layout was meticulously planned to capture serene views of the surrounding paddy fields and pond, creating a harmonious connection between the built environment and the natural landscape.
Natural ventilation played a crucial role in the design strategy, with openings strategically positioned to channel airflow and enable comfortable cross-ventilation throughout the space. The bathroom offers a unique experience, featuring picturesque views of the paddy fields and a bathtub positioned specifically to allow guests to soak while taking in the scenic beauty. A screened opening at the top allows natural light and fresh air to flow in organically.
The color palette reflects a deep understanding of environmental harmony, with exterior colors carefully selected to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Some walls were deliberately left untouched, with exposed concrete plaster retained to enhance the connection with nature. Inside, warm and cozy tones create a welcoming atmosphere for guests, while the bathrooms feature rustic color schemes with subtle red accents that add depth and character to the spaces.
One of the project's most compelling aspects is its commitment to building with memory and sustainable practices. The architects chose to revive and reuse existing materials wherever possible, including original windows, doors, tiles, and columns. The veranda features columns salvaged from a dismantled local home, carrying with them the nostalgia and stories of the past. A stone pillar sourced from a nearby dismantled temple now serves a structural purpose while shaping the outdoor space, and the main door, carefully restored from the original structure, proudly carries forward its historical legacy.
Material choices throughout the project reflect both aesthetic and environmental considerations. Bricks were selected for the steps to complement the earthy palette while serving as an eco-friendly material choice. Clay tiles line the building, offering a natural, durable, and sustainable finish that ages beautifully with time. Old furniture and reclaimed wood were sourced both locally and from the existing structure, significantly reducing waste while enriching the space with character and warmth.
Beyond its architectural achievements, the Kalam project has generated significant positive impact for the local community. The renovation created employment opportunities for local craftsmen, empowered farmers in the region, and encouraged neighboring landowners to rediscover value in their land. The boutique farmhouse brings visitors closer to authentic village life, generating both community pride and sustainable livelihood opportunities for residents.
