New York's renowned contemporary art gallery, Sikkema Jenkins & Co., has officially changed its name to Sikkema Malloy Jenkins. This change, which was approved in 2023 before the tragic murder of founder Brent Sikkema in January 2024, honors the significant contributions of partner Meg Malloy. Malloy, who has been instrumental in the gallery's development for over two decades, played a pivotal role alongside Sikkema and Michael Jenkins in shaping the gallery's identity and expanding its reach.
The gallery, initially founded in 1991 under the name Wooster Gardens in Soho, has become a prominent fixture in the art world, representing over 30 artists. Among the established names on its roster are renowned artists such as Kara Walker, Vik Muniz, and Arturo Herrera, alongside newer talents like Heidi Lau and Keltie Ferris. Sikkema Malloy Jenkins is especially celebrated for its early and continued support of underrepresented artists, including women, artists of color, and queer artists—values that have been central to its identity since its inception.
In a statement released alongside the name change, Meg Malloy expressed her commitment to continuing the gallery’s mission, emphasizing that both she and Michael Jenkins remain dedicated to preserving the gallery’s independent spirit and commitment to its artists, which were integral to Brent Sikkema’s original vision. Malloy, who first joined the gallery in 2002 and became a partner in 2005, said the renaming reflects the gallery's ongoing evolution and acknowledgment of her longstanding role in its growth.
Michael Jenkins, who joined the gallery as a director in 1997 and became a partner in 2003, also voiced his support for the renaming. He expressed his happiness at seeing Malloy receive this recognition, stating that the artists, long-term gallery friends, and clients would share in the sentiment.
The renaming of the gallery is a significant moment in the art world, marking a new chapter for a space that has long been known for championing artists who might otherwise be overlooked. With Malloy at the helm, Sikkema Malloy Jenkins is poised to continue its mission of promoting diverse voices and pushing the boundaries of contemporary art.
