Backside Works., a renowned subculture artist often likened to the "Banksy of Asia," will open his first solo exhibition in South Korea on October 17 at SH Gallery Seoul in Apgujeong Rodeo. The exhibition, titled "Fried Rice," will showcase original works alongside collaborative pieces featuring popular Sanrio characters like Hello Kitty, My Melody, Kuromi, Cinnamoroll, Pompompurin, and Pochacco.

Since starting his career in 2017 in Fukuoka, Japan, Backside Works. has made a name for himself by blending elements of animation and graffiti into his artwork, drawing inspiration from 1980s and 1990s Japanese anime and street culture. His style often incorporates flat, comic-like techniques using various media such as painting, spray, pen art, giclée, and stickers to create a distinctive visual language.

Unlike traditional depictions of cute female characters, Backside Works. focuses on portraying heroines. "What I do is simple—send heroines to stand by your side," he says, viewing these heroines as companions in life's journey. His signature character, Valiant Girl, often features in his artworks, symbolizing resilience and a sense of companionship for the viewer.

The artist's collaboration with Sanrio characters marks his second partnership with the brand, following his earlier exhibition "50 five-o" in Tokyo. His art from this series was previously displayed at the "Hello Kitty 50th Anniversary Exhibition" held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul earlier this year, where it received widespread acclaim.

Backside Works. has collaborated with numerous well-known brands such as Levi's, Converse, Weekly Shonen Jump, and Sanrio Characters. He continues to create both fine art and collectible merchandise under the exclusive representation of SH Gallery. His unique blend of "otaku" aesthetics and refined artistic touch has captivated a global audience.

The upcoming "Fried Rice" exhibition will introduce new artworks featuring Sanrio characters embedded within the world of Valiant Girl. By integrating these beloved characters into the artist's imaginative universe, the pieces will emphasize Sanrio's philosophy of "being together in harmony."

The opening reception, starting at 5 p.m. on October 17, promises a lively event with a raffle giveaway of Backside Works.' original potted plant designs. Exclusive items, including posters and stickers featuring his signed collaborations with Sanrio Characters, will be available for sale alongside the original artwork.
