Johyun Gallery in Seoul is hosting a solo exhibition by renowned Mexican artist Bosco Sodi from November 22, 2024, to January 19, 2025. Titled Dusks, this exhibition serves as a continuation of Dawns, which was showcased earlier this fall at Johyun Gallery in Haeundae. While Dawns metaphorically captured the energy and movement of early morning through lavender-hued monochromatic paintings and golden volcanic stone sculptures, Dusks offers a contemplative counterpart. Through gray and black relief paintings, the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on tranquility, introspection, and the quiet passage of time.

Thematically, the two exhibitions are interconnected, representing the cyclical nature of day and night. Together, they evoke an acute awareness of life’s brevity and the relentless flow of time. Dusks transitions the viewer from the dynamic energy of dawn to the serene stillness of dusk, fostering an immersive exploration of inner space.

Bosco Sodi is known for his signature relief paintings and sculptural works that seem as if they were carved from the earth itself. His practice embraces natural materials such as sawdust, clay, soil, and glue, celebrating their imperfections and unique characteristics. The artist intentionally incorporates unpredictability into his process, allowing the materials to dictate the final form. For Sodi, these imperfections are not flaws but essential elements that imbue his works with authenticity and organic beauty. He views the marks of time and imperfection as metaphors for humanity's interconnectedness with the universe and our existence within the flow of nature.

Sodi's works evolve across a variety of media, including painting, clay sculpture, and installation. His approach is less about linear development and more about ongoing exploration and interaction with his materials. The process itself—marked by transformation and change—is central to his art. “In a constantly changing world, my works also transform with time, gaining beauty through their evolution,” Sodi stated. He added, “I hope that my creations will transcend my initial intent, expanding their meaning through viewers’ interpretations.”

His relief paintings, with their raw textures and earthy palettes, seem to bridge the realms of art and nature. Created through instinctive gestures and a deep engagement with his materials, these works resist rigidity, instead embracing the transient beauty of change. By emphasizing the natural flow of time, Sodi’s art connects viewers to larger universal rhythms.

Dusks showcases this ethos, presenting works that reflect both a meditative stillness and the dynamic interplay of control and spontaneity. Through their tactile presence and elemental materiality, the pieces transcend traditional boundaries of painting and sculpture, offering a unique sensory experience.

Bosco Sodi has garnered international acclaim for his innovative approach to art-making. His works have been exhibited at major institutions and galleries worldwide, including the Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico City and the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. Dusks marks another significant chapter in his exploration of time, material, and the ephemeral nature of existence.

Visitors to Dusks at Johyun Gallery will find themselves immersed in a space that resonates with the ebb and flow of life, offering a moment of quiet reflection amidst the ceaseless motion of the world.
